A Beginners Guide to Essential Oils

Anyone looking for a beginners guide to essential oils?

I’ve been using essential oils now for a year and a half. I remember the first day I received my Young Living oils in the mail…thinking “how do you really use all of these?” And “what is an essential oil?” In the starter kit, you get 11 oils, a diffuser and some other goodies that I’ll go into later in this post. Let’s go over what essential oils are and then we will talk about some uses for the oils in the Premium Starter Kit.

What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are the aromatic essences of trees, shrubs, herbs, grasses, resins and flowers. They can be clear, amber, yellow, green and even dark blue in color and range from runny to almost solid in consistency. They are not “essential” to your life, but they are the “essence” from the plant….hope that clarifies why they are called that.

Each essential oil comes from a specific part of the plant, too. (For instance Frankincense comes from the resin of a tree, Lemon comes from the peel of the fruit, Cinnamon comes from the bark of the tree, Rose comes from the petals, Pine comes from the needles and twigs.)

Essential oils have protective properties which are the plants natural defense mechanism that work the same in us as medicinal properties. They penetrate the cell membranes and can diffuse throughout our blood and tissues. The particles are small enough to cross the blood brain barrier.

One important thing about essential oils is that they are greaseless, never expire and will evaporate. You must keep the lids on them tight.

Be sure to choose essential oils that are sourced from reputable farms without the use of GMO’s, chemicals, or pesticides! Young living owns most of it’s farms and guarantees their oils purity from start to finish. You risk buying oils that have been adulterated (fillers added in) from online sources that aren’t reputable, or from the store where the quality isn’t 100% pure.

Making an essential oil takes a lot of work just to make a tiny amount of product. For instance, it takes 60,000 roses to make 1 ounce of rose essential oil. It’s no wonder high quality essential oils seem expensive.

Uses for Essential Oils

There are many uses for essential oils, including aromatic diffusing, topical application and dietary consumption.

Each essential oils complex, pleasant and unique fragrance triggers emotions and memories which can help you find a balanced life. Oils like Jasmine, Peppermint, Lavender and Orange inspire a positive emotional state.

Oils like Sacred Frankincense and White Angelica help with spiritual awareness. Incense and essential oils from plants have always played an important part of religious ceremonies and rituals.

Oils like Lemon, Purification and Thieves are great for purifying your home due to their safe and effective powers to clean without use of harsh chemicals. (Hello….I love non-toxic alternatives!)

Those are a few examples of how you can use the oils. There are so many more ways that you can benefit from using essential oils. Once you get started with them, you will see all of the ways that you can incorporate them into your lifestyle, whether it be for replacing them for over-the-counter medication, beauty products or just for relaxation in the home. I promise you the benefits are amazing and you will hear this again and again from essential oil users.
