Happy National Coffee Day! Would you like Cream or Sugar?

Rise and Shine! It’s National Coffee Day! I’ve got my cup of java right now (Pete’s Coffee, Cafe Domingo, medium roast, whole bean, grounded fresh this morning courtesy of my Breville coffee maker).  I don’t know about you, but coffee turns me into a living being in the morning. I really enjoy the smell and taste of it! It is invigorating and brings on all of the feel good emotions when I wake up. Just for fun, here is a little coffee lesson and some fun facts about coffee that you may not know:

A cup of coffee is based on 4 components: aroma, body, acidity and flavor.

*When determining the body of a coffee, the bean, the roast, and the brew are all factors. The bean affects the texture of the coffee, whether its silky, creamy, thick or thin on the tongue and throat. However, the darker the roast and how it is brewed will alter the feel of a coffee’s body, too. Grandpa’s motor oil blend versus the coffee shop around the corner’s silky smooth, well-practiced grind have entirely different bodies.

The region a coffee is grown determines its acidity. The higher the elevation the coffee grows, the higher the quality and the acidity.

The first evidence of drinking coffee or the knowledge of the coffee tree  appeared in the middle of the 15th century in Yemen. t was here coffee seeds were first roasted and brewed, much like they are prepared today. Yemeni traders brought coffee back to their homeland from Ethiopia and began to cultivate the seed.

In the late 1600’s, the coffee beans were smuggled out of the Middle East and then spread to Italy, the rest of Europe, Indonesia and then the Americas.* *Facts provided by National Day Calendar.

Brazil is the highest producer or coffee, followed by Colombia. More than 50 countries around the world grow coffee beans. Check the label on your bag of coffee to see where your coffee comes from!

I’ve had the chance to go to coffee plantation in Costa Rica. It was amazing to see what a coffee bean looks like off of the tree, to see the drying and roasting processes and to taste a fresh cup of brewed coffee there. I highly recommend going to see one if you are ever in a country that produces coffee!
