I was just thinking back to the Thanksgiving weekend, and how we travelled out of town for it. We drove down to visit my sister and brother-in-law, who live about 300 miles from us. We had to decide which car we wanted to take, and I’ll tell you why I wish we had our old car back for the trip.
We have gone through 5 cars in the span of 4 years. We have bought cars and we have leased cars. It seems like 2 years is the amount of time we give to each car before we trade it in for a newer car, or one with less miles. Have we found the perfect family car? I would say the Minivan (that we had for 2 years) has been the most practical!
Our current cars are the Toyota Rav4 (which we are leasing), and a Ford F150 (which we bought). We chose to take the Toyota down to St. Louis because we really have not put a lot of miles on it. Since I became a stay at home mom over a year ago, I really only drive to the store and other local venues. Even though it’s a lease, we can still afford to put some miles on it yet.
The Toyota is a 5-seater, (but only really a 4-seater if you have 2 car seats in the back). My mom came on the trip with us, and luckily she is super tiny, as she would probably be the only person to fit in that middle seat between the car seats! Don’t get me wrong, I love this car otherwise- (it drives great in snow, it handles well)- but it makes me miss our old minivan that we traded in for the truck.
If we still had our minivan, the cabin ride inside the car would have been a little more comfortable. We were able to fit everything we needed in the trunk of the Toyota, but I do miss the roominess of the minivan and the ability to let the kids watch movies and have their own private seats.
If you have children that use car seats, or are starting to plan your family, do your research on space inside the vehicle. Having 2 car seats takes up an enormous amount of space in a car seat row. Head over to Cars.com to research vehicles and find the right fit for your family. You can read reviews from real people, get all of the cars facts, photos, and details on maintenance and repair.
We seem to keep changing our priorities on what is important to us in a car. Sometimes we favorite the roominess of a car, sometimes we look for luxury aspects. We do know that we need a car that is good in the snow and can fit car seats! We do make sure that we research our cars thoroughly and find a good deal.
What are some really important factors for you when choosing a car? Which car(s) have you enjoyed driving while having a family?
